Sweden’s to Expand Assistance to Liberia.

Sweden is to expand its role in bringing peace and democracy to Liberia, where it already provides peacekeeping troops in the country. Alan Doss, the UN's top envoy to Liberia, urged the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) to fortify the rule of law by helping to restructure the police service and strengthen the administration of justice

Liberia , which has just elected Africa's first woman president, is in the process of consolidating its democracy after 14 years of civil war. “Sweden is a partner in peacekeeping, so you must become a partner in peacebuilding as well,” said Mr. Doss. Per Byman, head of the SIDA's Humanitarian Assistance Division, announced that the agency will offer transitional assistance to Liberia to compliment the humanitarian support it has already funnelled through the UN and NGOs.
