First European Military Mission Gets Under Way In FYR Macedonia

The first European military mission to be undertaken in the context of the European Security apparatus got under way this week as the European Union in Macedonia took over responsibility for the mission in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The mission had previously been the responsibility of NATO.

Commenting on the commencement of the mission in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, European Commission President Romano Prodi said that the long process of European integration had taken another step forward.

Alluding to the differences of view between the Unites States and the European Union over Iraq in particular, President Prodi said, "the tragic context makes today's event seem slight in comparison to the differences dividing us. But appearances can be deceptive and the significance of the first military mission undertaken under the umbrella of European security should not be undervalued."

It was a sign that Europe was still pushing ahead in spite of everything, "this Europe that people yearn for both within the EU and outside, and that is still lacking."

President Prodi said he sent his warmest greetings and best wishes to all the European personnel engaged in the mission whose object was to safeguard peace and stability in the Balkans and to restore people's tranquillity and confidence in the future there. "In so doing, those personnel are helping to carry forward the European integration process. I see no better way to use our military force."
