Alarm Over Proposed Removal of President of Slovakia's Supreme Court

In a move that could have possible implications for Slovakia's admission to the European Union, the UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Param Cumaraswamy, has expressed grave concern about the process in Slovakia's National Council to remove the President of the country's Supreme Court.

Mr Cumaraswamy said the action would be seen domestically and internationally as a political -- and not a legal - measure and could lead to the perception that the judiciary of Slovakia was not independent.

The Slovak Minister of Justice, Jan Carnogursky, recently formally initiated the Government's motion to remove Supreme Court President Stefan Harabin, allegedly without waiting for a report in preparation by the Special Rapporteur following his visit to the Slovak Republic last month.
