Donors respond to UN calls for Assistance to Chechnya

The United Nations Emergency Relief Co-ordinator, Carolyn McAskie, today appealed for aid to assist some 160,000 internally displaced Chechens but emphasised that this was not be used as a tool to force them to return to their homes.

Describing the extensive damage she witnessed in Chechnya, Ms. McAskie said Grozny had been absolutely devastated. The people of the region were doing a tremendous amount to rebuild what they can, she said and their efforts were being supplemented by international organisations.

Donors have so far responded positively to the UN's request for funds to assist the people of the region. Ms McAskie predicted that, by the end of the year, close to 100 per cent of the $40 million (EUR 48 million) that had been requested would have been received.
